FAIS has new Members

Our new members are Eleanora Busato, Matti Huotari, Xiong Junlin, Pasi Kemppainen, Jarmo Koponen, Juho Leinonen, Saara Merkivi, Dariush Salami, Esmail Tavakolnia, Petri Tikka, Juri Timonen, and Jouni Viskari. FAIS now has a total of 318 members.

The First General Assembly of 2025

We welcome all FAIS members to the first General Assembly of 2025, to be held on 9.5.2025. This is one of the two main annual meetings of the society, with the discussion and approval of the society’s financial report for 2024 as the main item in the agenda. 

The assembly is organized as a hybrid event, i.e. remote participation via Zoom will be supported. 

An invitation containing details and instructions on how to attend the meeting has been sent to all FAIS members by e-mail. If you did not receive an invitation, contact chair@stes.fi. Deadline for registering for the meeting is Wednesday May 7. 

We hope to see as many of you as possible! 

Call for nominations: Finnish AI Dissertation Award 2024

The Finnish AI Society (FAIS) is seeking for nominations of candidates for the Finnish AI Dissertation Award 2024. This national distinction is awarded annually to an outstanding dissertation in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Proposed PhD dissertations should have contributions in AI interpreted in a broad sense (cf. the scopes of major AI conferences and journals) and must have been defended at a Finnish university between December 1, 2023 and December 31, 2024. The nominations are due by May 31, 2025, and should be sent by email to dissertation-award@stes.fi

The winner is awarded a 1000 euro prize, and the winning thesis is presented during a special session in AI Day 2025 in November. For more information on the award, see https://www.stes.fi/finnish-ai-dissertation-award/

The 31st European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, ECAI 2028 in Helsinki

The exact dates of ECAI’28, the 31st European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, have been determined. The conference will take place in Helsinki in the Finlandia Hall from October 7 until October 12, 2028. 

Save the Date: AI Day: 13.11.2025

The ninth annual AI Day will take place on November 13 at Aalto University’s Dipoli in Otaniemi. More information will be available on the AI Day website once it is up. 

As in previous years, FAIS will be responsible for the scientific program at AI Day, with the general arrangements and the industrial program taken care of by FCAI, the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence. 

Consider proposing a poster by sending a one-page abstract, or offer to give a talk by submitting a full paper, either a new paper published in 2025 or one already submitted or to be submitted later to an international conference. Full submission instructions will be available later, with submission deadline in late August or early September. More information will be available on the AI Day Website.

Preliminary Announcement: General Assembly in Autumn 2025

The second General Assembly of FAIS will take place in late autumn 2025 (either late November or early December), with the election of the new Chair and Board of FAIS for 2026-2027 as well as the action plan for 2026 as the main items on the agenda.
