Call for nominations: Finnish AI Dissertation Award 2021

The Finnish AI Society (FAIS) is seeking for nominations of candidates for the Finnish AI Dissertation Award 2021. This newly established national distinction will be awarded annually to an outstanding dissertation in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Proposed dissertations should have contributions in AI interpreted in a broad sense (cf. the scopes of major AI conferences and journals) and must have been defended at a Finnish university between December 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021. A parallel nomination for the EurAI Dissertation Award with the same submission deadline and eligibility criteria is strongly encouraged.

The winner will receive a monetary award of 1,000 euros, sponsored by Unity Technologies, and will be invited to give a talk on the topic of the dissertation in an award ceremony in June 2022.

The nominations are due by May 22nd, 2022, by email to the address To be taken into consideration, the supervisor (or another nominator) of the dissertation must submit a single PDF file including

  1. Cover letter giving basic details of the dissertation: Name, affiliation and contact details of the nominator, the date of the defense, and the names of
    official pre-examiner(s) and opponent(s);
  2. Signed letters of recommendation from at least two experts (this may include the supervisor, as well as the pre-examiners and opponents); and
  3. The full nominated dissertation or a link to publicly available PDF version.

Based on the submissions, the Board of FAIS nominates a committee of experts for their evaluation. The selection of the winner is based on factors such as scientific quality, impact (if already visible), originality, novelty, and public/national interest. If a submitted dissertation receives another national or international award before or during the evaluation period, the supervisor or the candidate is requested to inform the committee. The committee may also provide additional honorable mentions or decide to split the award between multiple winners.
